PEFC
The challenge
Consumers are increasingly seeking evidence of environmentally sound business practices.
Public authorities and corporate procurement policies increasingly demand reassurances
and proof from the paper and wood-processing industries that the wood they use for
their products comes from sustainably managed forests.
It is generally agreed that wood-based products have a better overall environmental
record than competitor materials, but questions have arisen about the management
of the forests from which the wood originates. Businesses therefore need a reliable
and credible mechanism to prove to their customers where the wood for their products
has come from.
What is certification?
Evidence that wood comes from sustainably managed forests can be provided through
forest certification. Forest certification covers:
- Verification of legal orgin of fiber (LOV)
- Sustainable Forest Management certification of forest enterprises, which provides
an assurance that the forests are managed sustainably.
- Chain of Custody certification, which is a mechanism for tracing material from certified
forests to the final product such as ENOVA. (CoC)
Examples of international forest certification systems include FSC and PEFC. The
latter covers various national programmes such as SFI, CSA and ATFS in North America
and others in Europe and Australia.
Certified fibre for ENOVA has been sourced from PEFC-certified forests in South
America andEurope.
Certified fiber sources
• West Fraser, Saskatchewan, Canada
• CMPC Cellulosa, Chile

What is PEFC?
PEFC is an independent, non-profit,
nongovernmental organization, which
promotes the sustainable management
of the world’s forests through third
part certification. Since its
establishment in1999, PEFC has
become the world’s largest
certification programme for
sustainable forest management.
Who is supporting PEFC?
PEFC is supported by environmental organizations,
state authorities, trade unions, forest managers and
owners, timber traders as well as producers and retailers
of paper and timber products.

Where does PEFC-certified fibre for Enova come from?
Certified fibre for ENOVA has been sourced from sustainably managed forest located
in South America and Europe.
APP and PEFC Certification
- PEFC is a leading, internationally recognized forest management certification program
which, among other things, ensures the legal and non-controversial origin of the
fibre used in market pulp.
- APP supports forestry certification as a mechanism to promote the responsible
- management of the world’s working forests.
- APP has chosen to focus on Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certifications
Schemes (PEFC) forestry and “Chain-of-Custody” certification which is the largest
and most recognized forestry standard.
- Based in Geneva, Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certifications Schemes, is
the world’s largest independent, non-profit, certification body. To date, PEFC has
certified more than twice the amount of forest area than FSC. These sources assure
APP of a sustainable supply of certified pulp to service our customers around the
globe.
- We’re proud that APP’s four main paper mills have achieved Program for the
- Endorsement of Forest Certifications Schemes “Chain-of-Custody” Certification in
line with other leading global pulp and paper manufacturers.
- PEFC promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party
- certification and provides an assurance mechanism to all purchasers of wood and
paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.
